When to Winterize Your Irrigation System in the Okanagan

Every fall, we get the same question from Osoyoos homeowners: "When should I winterize my irrigation system?" Get the timing wrong and you're facing either a week or two of hand-watering or burst pipes once the cold sets in. With 18 years of hands-on experience in the South Okanagan, here's when — and why — to schedule your blowout.

Book in Mid-September for an Early-October Blowout

For Osoyoos and Oliver, begin booking in mid-September and have your system winterized by early October. Don't wait until November — Rocks N Blocks does not run blowouts in November. Here's why the timing matters:

Too Early:

• Daytime temperatures may still warrant some irrigation
• Lawns and plantings may still be in active growth
• You may need to hand-water a few times after blowout

Too Late:

• The first hard freeze can arrive any time after early October in the South Okanagan
• Even one hard-freeze night can burst irrigation lines and valves
• Backflow preventers are especially vulnerable (expensive to replace)
• Our schedule fills up — last-minute bookings become difficult or impossible

What is "Winterization" and Why It's Necessary

Irrigation winterization means removing water from your system using compressed air. In Osoyoos and Oliver, winter brings repeated freeze/thaw cycles and freezing temperatures. Water left in pipes expands when frozen, causing:

• Cracked PVC pipes (common in shallow zones)
• Split valve bodies (costly to replace)
• Damaged backflow preventers (one of the most expensive repairs)
• Broken sprinkler heads and fittings

The Blowout Process

A professional blowout clears the system zone by zone using compressed air. In general terms, we:

1. Turn off the water supply at the main shutoff valve
2. Drain the backflow preventer
